My Students

Though we start the year with an assortment of school supplies, we are out or nearly out of many things. Pencils are dwindling quickly, but we are also nearly out of markers, glue, and scissors.

We are a Title 1 school in an ethnically diverse school district.

We serve approximately 80% of our students a free or reduced lunch, so many of our students live at or near the poverty line. Our school is a K-5 public school building with about 475 students. My class is a wonderful group of children that are eager and active learners!

My Project

Because pencils are a constant need in a classroom, they are also one of the supplies we run out of the fastest. Despite the fact that we start the year off with what seems like a ton of pencils and other supplies, the year is half over and we are nearly out of these items. I am hoping to use a new management system with the pencils, giving each student a pencil pouch and a few pencils for the week to be responsible for. Turning in all their pencils at the end of the week will earn them rewards and hopefully instill a greater sense of responsibility about their school supplies.

I am hoping that getting new supplies will re-energize the students for the rest of the year.

Using the pencil pouches, I am hopeful that they will learn responsibility for their own materials, and thereby, treat my materials in the classroom a bit more responsibly also.
