My students need a plant growing system and an iPad with an Apple Pencil to learn about and document research about our ecosystem, conservation, plant growth.
Welcome to our fifth grade classroom! We are an energetic class where the students love to explore new ideas and concepts. We spend our days exploring and learning about reading, math, and STEM activities. Our school has the highest poverty rates in the district with over 60% of our students receiving free or reduced price lunch. Although our class may struggle with economic and social difficulties outside of school when we walk through the door to class, we are one as a school family.
In our class, we work together to have fun, make mistakes, and learn!
We come from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of world experiences. As we approach middle school, we are learning to work together, learn from each other, and understand the similarities and differences that make us all unique.
My Project
Although my school is on the edge of a suburban and rural area, many of my students spend most of their time indoors, away from nature and the natural environment. Our natural resources are often taken for granted with the expectation that we will always have what we need. My goal is to use Earth Day to jump start the ideas and experiences of exploring the natural environment and learning the importance of a healthy ecosystem.
We will use our new supplies to grow native plants, document their growth, and share the new knowledge about conservation in a digital format.
Using an iPad we will use virtual field trips to experience the coastal northwest and its temperate rainforests, as well as ecosystems across the globe that we could not experience near us. The use of the Apple pencil enables mark-up functions of the iPad that were previously unavailable where the students are able to write on the digital media and mark it with their own ideas. Using the hands-on growth of plants and combining it with the virtual world, I hope to inspire students to take care of our plant!
