My Students

My 8th grade students are enrolled in an Algebra 1 Regents class. These students come from a multicultural background, are worldly, inspiring, hardworking, and a great deal of fun. They inspire me everyday to do my best and I hope they feel the same. These students have gone from 7th grade Math straight into 9th grade Algebra. They will walk into their high schools next year with many credits already complete. This is the second year that MS51 has pushed all students towards Algebra 1. I feel it has been a great success with over a 90% pass rate.

My Project

In our classroom, the practice of students tutoring their peers have always had amazing results. Student tutors are always kind, caring, and often sound more like friendly encouraging coaches than tutors. I host an 8AM (school begins at 8:40AM) tutoring program where student tutors gleefully arrive to help their fellow students. When a struggling students walks through the door, they are often greeted by more than one student who is ready, willing, and able to work with them on their online Delta Math HW assignments. I have been utilizing this method for many years and often see friendships form out these tutoring arrangements.

The Delta Math online program has been a fantastic teaching tool; now I need more laptops.

My goal is to have 10 student tutors and 30 struggling learners arriving everyday for this morning program. This type of program can only be successful with an abundance of working laptops. Donor's Choose has already helped me secure 3 laptops; I am now hoping to secure 4 more.
