Peer Ambassadors: Laying Out the Welcome Mat

My Students

I am a school counselor in a public elementary school in Tennessee. The students at my school are a diverse group culturally, ethnically, and economically. I work primarily with students in grades 3 through 5, providing classroom guidance and individual and small-group counseling services. Much of my work involves teaching students life skills and encouraging character development.

Helping others and demonstrating personal responsibility are two skills that I highlight through my peer ambassador program.

In addition to gaining about 150 new Kindergarten students each year, we typically welcome another 100 students who are coming to our school after beginning their school careers somewhere else. A student who moves to a new school after beginning somewhere else faces special emotional and social challenges getting used to new home and school environments, making new friends, and achieving to his or her potential.

My Project

While our Kindergarten teachers work to integrate whole classes of new students, my 5th-grade peer ambassadors focus on assisting our new 1st- through 5th-grade students make a successful transition into our school family. My peer ambassadors strive to make these new students feel welcome and a part of our school community as quickly as possible in multiple ways. The peer ambassadors walk new students to class during the early days of the school year, check on these students to see how they are doing, and welcome them with goodie bags filled with special pencils, erasers, and wristbands. This project provides the means to fill those goodie bags!

How well students transition into a new school impacts their ability to succeed emotionally, socially, and academically for years beyond the actual move.

The goodie bags provided through this project provide a tangible reminder to new students that they have come to a caring school and that we are here to welcome them and help them in whatever ways possible.

My peer ambassador program helps our new students assimilate into their new surroundings, promoting emotional and social health and supporting academic success. For my peer ambassadors, this service opportunity supports the development of character traits such as responsibility, charity, and empathy.
