This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When I walk into my class every morning, I have to adjust my eyes as I see thirty energizer bunnies running, hopping, and jumping to get my attention.
While these students, like the energizer bunny, never seem to run short on energy, they are without many things including sufficient income, food, and access to health care.
Our school is located in a low-income area of Manhattan where our community relies heavily on our school. The staff and teachers at our school make it our responsibility to ensure our students receive all the individualized services they may need to succeed.
My Project
Through reflection, my students were mature enough to notice two major obstacles to learning. First, they noticed how distractible they can be as they get older and, second, they realized that in order to do their best learning they need to get their energy out.
Much research was done, specifically in Canada, about how stationary bikes and cycling during lessons can increase focus resulting in greater academic success.
My students have tried exercise breaks or incorporating song and dance into lessons but this, we all agreed, was breaking new ground.
With these pedal exercisers, students can place them under the desk and out of the way. As they feel themselves getting distracted or extra energetic, they can use them while completing their work. Using the meters attached to the exercisers we can track important data such as duration and calories burnt coupled with the amount of work completed or pages read in a book to try and notice a positive relationship among the two. It is our hope that these pedal exercisers will have a positive effect on the learning process.
