My Project
In our kindergarten classroom, big feelings happen every day — and that’s okay! At this early age, children are just beginning to understand and manage their emotions. That’s why I’m incorporating Conscious Discipline, a research-based, trauma-informed approach that helps young learners develop the essential skills of self-regulation, empathy, and emotional awareness.
Using Conscious Discipline materials, I’ll create a Safe Place in our classroom — a calming area where students can go when they’re feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or just need a moment to breathe.
The space will include tools like a Feelings Chart, breathing strategy posters, emotion-themed books, and soft sensory items. These resources help children identify their feelings, practice calming techniques, and return to learning with a clear mind and an open heart.
In addition to the Safe Place, students will engage with daily check-ins and kindness activities that promote healthy communication and build a supportive classroom community. These tools empower even our youngest learners to recognize their emotions and respond in safe, respectful ways — instead of acting out or shutting down.
