Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our classroom's "Peace of Mind Place" will help fifth graders develop compassion by focusing on two key skills: perspective-taking and empathetic action.
With the increasing distractions of technology, it is more important than ever to help students develop the skills they need to navigate their emotions and interactions.
This project will create a dedicated space where students can practice self-reflection and, in doing so, learn to better understand both their own feelings and the feelings of others.
The Peace of Mind Place will be equipped with items that encourage self-reflection, such as comfortable cushions, a lamp, and a zen garden. These tools create a calming atmosphere where students can use their Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) journals to identify their emotions and consider the perspectives of others.
Compassion will be fostered by using our SEL curriculum to focus on perspective-taking, which is the ability to see the world from another person's point of view. A student who is upset with a classmate might use the Peace of Mind Place to reflect on why their classmate might have acted that way. This kind of reflection is the first step toward empathetic action—choosing to help others in a meaningful way. Once a student understands another person's perspective, they can then decide how to respond with kindness. The items in the Peace of Mind Place, including the TpT gift card, will be used to purchase resources that provide scenarios and prompts to guide students in this process.
Student learning will be measured in several ways. Through class discussions and written reflections, we can help students move beyond just identifying their own feelings to understanding the feelings of others and taking positive action. With your support, we can create a classroom community where compassion is a habit, not just a concept.
