it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The primary goal of this initiative is to create nurturing "Peace Corners" or "Calm-Down Corners" within all 16 classrooms at TCS. TCS's student population is 99% students of color, many of whom are unhoused, and most of whom live in extreme poverty. A significant portion of students at TCS have high needs, arising from backgrounds marked by various forms of trauma. These experiences can understandably make it challenging for them to engage fully in a conventional classroom setup.
Establishing peace corners will provide our students with a semi-private space where they can safely regulate their emotions and behaviors without having to leave the classroom.
This approach encourages continuous engagement by minimizing transitions and interruptions, which can be particularly beneficial in helping students swiftly refocus and reintegrate into the learning process. Our goal is to teach students how to work through hard feelings and build resiliency. Supporting this project means believing in every child's potential to overcome challenges and thrive in their learning journey.
