This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students are expected to come to school and learn every day, but some days are harder than others. We expect all our students to work at their highest potential, but some do not even have their basic needs met. As adults we have a toolbox of coping skills and use them when we need to, so why don't our students? Students will be more successful in the classroom if they have a space to go to when they are not having a great day.

The peace corner is a space within the classroom that all students can utilize to take a break if they need one.

Students can use this space for all types of uncomfortable emotions so that they can work through those emotions in an appropriate way and get back to their day. When students do not have an appropriate outlet, we may see inappropriate behaviors that are not only disruptive to the classroom but also not allowing that student to learn how to handle big emotions.

My goal is to have a Peace Corner in every room so that students know they can use these techniques anywhere. The peace corner includes a variety of items to help them calm down. The items include a box to put the items in, a stuffed animal to hug, colored pencils to color calming pictures, a sensory maze to distract their brain, textured stickers to remind them to breathe and give them somewhere to focus, and mini-stress balls to squeeze their anger out. We need our students to learn these techniques so that they can develop resiliency for life's ups and downs.
