Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my class are mostly Hispanic and come from families that do not speak English. They come from homes that often don't have computers or technology. Many live in poverty and have challenging home lives.
Students in my class are voracious readers that love to read and listen to a variety of books.
I read two or three books aloud every day. We often reread stories and practice decoding strategies that students then go practice on their own. It is vital that I have a large library filled with many books. Students often have very few books at home, so reading in the classroom becomes so much more important for them.
My Project
I have always given my students space in my classroom to work alone, or take a time-out if needed. However, I recently found an idea for a Peace Corner in the classroom.
This is a place for students to practice self-regulation and manage their stress and frustration in a de-escalation space in the classroom.
In my years of working with kids, I have found that they simply don't possess the skills to cope with their emotions, stress, etc.. People assume kids will just "get it" and they don't. I try to explicitly teach these skills as issues arise in my class, but I'm going to start teaching PROACTIVELY and help my students have strategies at their disposal before problems come up. I have a safe place in my class for kiddos to have space, but never anything as overt as a "peace corner". I'm really excited to do this in my classroom
