My Students
Welcome to our classroom! We're a diverse bunch, but what's evident is that we are a community. We are a neighborhood school with about 80% of students walking to or being dropped off at school by a guardian. We are a high poverty school, but my students are motivated to learn and want be engaged in the classroom.
Being an inclusive school, our classroom is full of students with diverse abilities, integrating both general and special education in one room.
These first graders have differing skills, but one thing they have in common is a love for learning.
My first graders are energetic and enthusiastic! They love to sing and get up and move. Unfortunately, many of them are missing basic academic skills in the areas of literacy, math, and writing. This year we are focusing on closing the achievement gap and creating a classroom full of confident, successful students.
My Project
Classrooms can be busy and chaotic. From academic content to social and emotional skills, students are always working. Students can become upset for many reasons, including fatigue, stress, home life, social interactions, or sickness. Students need a place to self-calm during stressful times so that they can deescalate and return ready to learn.
A classroom Peace Center is where students can self-select to use calming strategies in order to return ready to learn.
A peace center is a quiet spot in the classroom where students can use strategies to calm themselves. Our Peace Center has posters with breathing strategies as well as some fidget toys that students use to improve focus and relieve stress. Adding weighted lap pads to our Peace Center would provide sensory input that is known to calm students with anxiety, Autism, and ADHD. The fidget toys and stress balls would help to release stress and increase focus.
