Peace-Building Students Begin with Thievery

My students need 80 copies of The Book Thief to increase their understanding of the Holocaust and their appreciation of beautiful writing.

My Students

"In years to come, he would be a giver of bread, not a stealer- proof again of the contradictory human being. So much good, so much evil. Just add water." Markus Zusak-The Book Thief

My students are excited to learn about history, but mostly about different people and cultures, since our school is a diverse environment.

Students feel enriched when they know more about varying cultures, and this brings a unique understanding about each other. My students also have wonderful school spirit, and demonstrate their school pride in many ways, one of which is by upholding our honor code. Students strive to have integrity, and hold themselves and each other to high moral and ethical standards. My students also enjoy giving back to our community by volunteering to serve whether that is by sponsoring a family to provide for during the holidays, or food drives, or blood drives, or our races for a multitude of charities. My students give back to our school, and our community.

My Project

Students will be able to delve into the time period of World War II and the Holocaust in a real and personal way by reading and studying this novel. They will also be able to analyze the beautiful way in which this novel is written and participate in activities to improve their reading and writing skills. This novel and the work we complete will help expand students' view to include the whole world, including places and traditions with which they are unfamiliar. This international perspective will help prepare them for our society which is indeed global. This novel will also show students human injustices, giving them a safe format to explore this types of injustices, and become part of solutions to prevent injustice from occurring. "I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." Elie Wiesel

In my Holocaust Literature class, my students and I will examine this novel, and all the literature through a peace-building lens, meaning that students will discover how they handle conflicts in their own life and begin to be advocates for nonviolence and peace.

This may start by students changing their thinking about others. Then, students may stand up against bullying. Finally, this unit will become a catalyst for a community service project in which students can their world a better place.
