PE - Tumbling Into Fitness, Fun and Volleyball Standards
Help me give my students tumbling mats and volleyball poles which will be used in a multitude of skill development activities and social emotional learning opportunities.
As we continue our journey back into in person learning, teachers are constantly reminded of the impacts the pandemic has had on our students and ourselves. We are also reminded of our students' resiliency. I teach elementary physical education - PE (K-5th grade) in a wonderfully diverse community.
PE is the perfect environment to help students learn about fitness, health, and nutrition; but more importantly, we are able to provide the perfect environment for students to work on their social emotional learning.
Students are struggling with this more than ever right now and I love being able to provide them with a vessel to re-learn how to function in group activities, how to persevere individually, and how to understand their emotions.
My students have brought me some much needed joy over the last 2 years and I take great pride in providing them with joy in my classroom. I've always enjoyed seeing the happiness on their faces as they play a game; but now, that joy means so much more to me and to them. We are all learning not to take joyful moments for granted. I promise to continuously strive to provide them with opportunities to grow.
My Project
Not only will students be able to use these mats to do a tumbling and balance unit; they will also be able to use them to set up a multitude of their favorite games used to work on skill development and teamwork. I love to use the mats to set up obstacle courses where students work in teams to complete tasks/challenges. The mats that we currently have at our school are small and old (possibly from the 1800's) Ha! I have also submitted for some volleyball poles/standards so that our students can take part in a volleyball unit. These can also be used for many other games and activities throughout the year.
Some of the students' favorite games and activities that they will be able to participate in are: Star Wars, Castle Ball, Oscar's Trash Can, Blizzard Tag, Scrabble Fitness, Math Pyramid, Battleship, Floor Hockey, Volleyball, and many more.
The great part about physical education equipment is that it can be used in so many different ways as long as a teacher is creative. Being creative and coming up with new and fun activities and games that the students will enjoy is one of my favorite parts about being a teacher.
