This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach P.E. to 6th graders in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. More than 80% of our school's students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch at our Title I school. The majority of our school time and funds are dedicated to academics.
But when it's time for PE, our sixth graders are ready to let loose and play all kinds of physically active games.
Unlike computer games, P.E. is live-action with hands-on experience as students' improve their catching, throwing, kicking, trapping, and dribbling skills. P.E. is not only fun, but it helps students be physically active now and promotes a lifelong healthy lifestyle.
My Project
My P.E. students love the game Around the World Basketball. Instead of waiting in line for their turn to shoot, 12 cones will be used to keep more students actively shooting on four different basketball courts.
Eighteen inch vinyl cones will be used in numerous PE units.
Then those same cones will be used in hula-hoop horseshoes that teaches students about scoring in horseshoes, teamwork, sportsmanship and adjusting their throwing style to improve their performance. Then... those same twelve cones will be used in a fast action game of Frisbee obstacle course.
Finally, this pandemic has highlighted that P.E. is a breeding grounds for germs and that I need to safeguard my students from the spread of all kinds of germs. I've included automatic sanitizer pumps so that students are given a pre-measured amount of sanitizer to insure germs are destroyed on contact before students touch equipment in the gym.
