My students come from a variety of backgrounds; our school is a Title I school with most of our students receiving free/reduced-price school lunches. Despite hardships they may face, my students come to school excited and feeling safe in the environment I, and other staff members, provide. Our classroom spaces serve many purposes to facilitate a safe learning environment; we have carpets for morning meetings and group talks, small table groups for group work, a 1:1 table for working with a teacher and student, and we have small classroom libraries.
This year we are also adding physical education to our general education classroom instead of going to a designated PE teacher.
My Project
This year we are teaching Physical education as individual classrooms/grade levels rather than having a designated PE teacher. This means each teacher is seeking out curriculum and materials to create those meaningful lessons happen. The materials requested are basic needs for a PE program. Materials include a variety of balls, beanbags and cones . I will be sharing these materials with another 1st grade classroom as well. We will work together to create a well rounded, standards based program for our students. The cones are necessary for place markers, students stand at cones as place markers. Students of this age are working with specific skills rather than learning a sport. We will practice how to kick, throw and catch different items and how to take turns.
