Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 5th-grade teacher in an ICT low-income public school in the Bronx. My class is composed of 55 students in a general education class, with students with IEP and ELL learners. My class is one of the most diverse fifth grades. They come from a community filled with poverty, homelessness, and crime, but they are filled with hope. These children attend a public school in an industrial and commercial community of New York City. My students are of African-American and Hispanic descent with 99% of them receiving free or reduced school meals.

Our school is located in high poverty, an industrial neighborhood surrounded by factories and nonstop high traffic.

Nevertheless, they are excited about learning and they come to school every day with hope, expectation, and enthusiasm.

This project is in desperate need of amazing supporters such as yourself. My students are in desperate need of tools that they do not have in the classroom.

My Project

This school year will start on September 16, 2020, with virtual learning. I want to provide my students with incentives to help them work hard during this tough time. Although my students are used to motivation through constant praise, encouragement, and classroom raffles that would normally happen in a traditional classroom setting, this school year will start a little different.

I want to show my students that their hard work pays off and motivate them by providing weekly incentives for the student of the week and students that have been putting forth maximum effort.

These gift cards will be given as weekly and monthly prizes as well as overall online participation awards. Our students need intrinsic as well as extrinsic motivation to encourage them to continue to do best during online learning. These gift cards will increase participation, achievement, and motivation! My students will build financial literacy by earning classroom dollars. Their math skills increase by counting, exchanging, and spending their dollars. I want to use positive motivation to help students grow through my classroom rewards store. Students earn points through classwork, grades, and behavior to shop at the store. Each month students are given a day to shop at the classroom store using the money they have earned. Students will have to balance, save, and budget for rewards they want! I am requesting gift cards from Starbucks, Old Navy, Panera, and Subway to help fill my classroom store. These items are awesome rewards the kids will want to save up to buy! I want to make sure I have enough gift cards so every student has the opportunity to save up their money to buy one.
