This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach a group of "at Promise" students who were pre-identified because they struggle in multiple areas, academics, attendance, and behavior. This program and class are designed to provide students with academic and social-emotional support to be successful in high school and provide them with opportunities to develop their leadership skills.
Our students face many obstacles and challenges and I don't want lack of access to clothing to be one of them.
I actually had a conversation with a student who was chronically absent and he said he wasn't coming to school because he didn't have clothes.
In addition to celebrating my students, I help with school-wide incentives and events. I recently organized a schoolwide clothing giveaway and it was a hit, and that made me realize that there is truly a need for access to clothing. Students were able to grab articles of donated clothing, shoes, and accessories and they were very grateful. This made me want to do these types of events more regularly.
In order to host more of these giveaways and to start a care closet, I need storage items, racks, hangers, shirts, and bags for students to take their "goodies." By supporting this project, you will be helping our students have access to clothing year-round. Thank you for your consideration.
