My Project
The goal of The Battle of the Books is to promote literacy, engagement, and a culture of reading in our schools. Librarians collaborated with fellow educators to recruit grade 9-12 team members at their schools and prepare all year for the final Battle. Some students meet monthly with teams to check in on their progress. They share ideas, talk about storylines and characters, and test each others’ knowledge. In this, our inaugural year for the Battle of the Books, we hope to host an in-person battle for students to compete in school-based teams and determine which school has the most reading power!
Our high school students have been preparing all year for the Battle of the Books, an event that encourages students to read and compete against other students and schools to demonstrate their strengths in reading!
Through discussions and activities with their classmates, students developed stronger understandings of character development and storylines.
To continue to grow the Battle of the Books and promote literacy with middle school students, we plan to award each participant in the Battle of the Books with a free copy of one of the LYRC/ LTRC 2026 books so that they have a head start on next year’s battle plan! Offering free book giveaways will promote literacy by paying reading with reading! Free book giveaways will allow all students to own a book of their own and fuel their passion for reading.
