Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The last couple years have been particularly hard on our students and especially our small community of Guadalupe. Many of our students lost family members to COVID-19 and didn't have the opportunities to get academic or social emotional support because their families were at economical disadvantage. We have the best kids around and I want them to know how special they are and recognize how hard they are working on their goals.
My project is one that will support all the students at my school and the educators as well.
We use PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies) to support our students both academically and behaviorally by giving them Panther Paws (tickets) when we recognize that they are following the school rules of bing safe, respectful, responsible, and a scholar. These tickets are used to buy items at the school store that I run on campus. As of right now, our students are earning tons of tickets and we have seen amazing improvement in how are students treat one another, but sadly we have run out of items in store for them to buy.
The items I put in the store are both for academic success and their social emotional well-being. For the academic success I put items like pencils, erasers, notebooks, and pencil sharpeners. For their social-emotional success I put items like pop-its, fidget spinners, stress balls, and any item to help them release their anxiety and stress that has built up over the years. As a school counselor I have provide items for a cool-down box in each classroom but I would love more individual items for my students to buy and use.
I hope this project gets funded because the store is really at the core to some of students and teacher success.
