I would like to give my students decodable books to help increase their reading abilities. Phonics based books help beginning readers become fluent in the art of reading. The more practice they have reading phonetic patterns, the more they pave the road to reading. I have spent the last several years teaching myself the science of reading and what it takes to help students achieve literacy. The overarching concept of becoming a fluent reader is that reading needs to be taught in a systematic and explicit way, through knowledge of patterns and practice with those patterns. The part of this formula that is missing from our classroom, is pattern based books that allow students to practice skills. Though we follow the phonics based, basal readers of our curriculum, we do not have much choice of books that students can choose on their own, to read for enjoyment. My goal is to provide my students with a library where they can explore and build their love of reading through choice, while at the same time providing them with what they need to be successful with their reading.
