This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are honors level students in a low-income area who are working hard, some very hard with jobs and more, to make better lives for themselves and get into a good college. They are hardworking, compassionate, and determined.

Many come from a disadvantaged background, with a 65% economic disadvantage; there are students who will be the first in their family to go to college.

They know this, and every day to them is a day to improve their lives and the lives of those they love.

My Project

When I first heard of patty paper, I had no idea what anyone was talking about. Patty paper? You mean that stuff that goes between hamburger patties? For Geometry? I was very confused, but then in a lesson I got the opportunity to use it, and I was hooked. I can make Geometry come to life in ways I had never, ever heard of before.

Geometry is the best subject for visualization and hands-on work, and what better way then Patty Paper!

Patty paper is so great for geometry because it comes in perfect squares, and it is see through.

Students can draw on, fold, and manipulate patty paper as they need to to understand transformations, translations, reflections and more. Students can create visual opportunities to see the math, not just do the numbers.

I have personally used technology in different geometry concepts, and they are cool, but I have found that there is nothing that compares to the hands on work required when using patty paper. Geometry becomes real and tangible when it is in your hands.
