Help me give my students ten piano keyboards to learn how to play the piano in my mathematics class! We use pianos to create patterns to help them develop linear and exponential functions and inequalities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
International Academy students at our school are new to our country in the last two years. I support their mathematic development, and this year I have brought in my piano and guitar to support a review of the basics and a introduction to more complex content.
With this project, each group of students will use the piano to review and practice integer arithmetics and fractions.
They will also be used to introduce students to linear functions, exponential functions, and inequalities. This covers four of the six chapters in our mathematics content. We will have one piano per group and 4 students will play together making it a great team building experience as well!
My goal of bringing in music to my math class is to help immigrant students from wealthy and strong academic backgrounds and students from poorer and lower academic backgrounds scramble their assumptions about who gets to learn math and who can learn math. These activities will bring joyful play into the math exploration and experience.
Many students who are academically struggling are from families who were poor in their home countries and couldn't go to school before coming to our school. Our students deserve pianos to make mathematics learning a playful review of the arithmetic basics without feeling embarrassed.
