This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an art teacher that is teaching in the elementary school that I attended as a child. I teach grades K-5 in a high-need community. I see over 300 students!
My students love art.
They love expressing themselves, creating, learning and exploring different types of materials. My students self-esteem improves every time they share with a smile what they have created. I had a third grade student that made a paper-mache rabbit with big eyes and long ears. I saw this young boys' attitude change as he completed his project, from an insecure, doubtful little boy, to a confident and proud student !
My Project
My students are currently creating preliminary drawings of patterns from around the world! They are going to use their drawings of patterns to create a collagraph plate to print from. They are going to learn how to create symmetrical and continuos pattens. My students will also learn how artists can be inspired from various cultures from around the world. We need printing materials such as inks, brayers, paper, glue, and brushes.
My students have never printed before!
Printing is an amazing process to experience! Studies has already proven that students who have more access to art classes have higher graduation rates (Kolodner, M. (2009, October 19). Bam team: gotta have art to succeed in hs:
Nearly all students from low‑income households
