Indianapolis is the home to my public third grade classroom. As an elementary teacher, I do it all! However, as state laws change, all of my students have less access to math materials. We are a Title 1 school and materials purchased through this funding can only be used with students that qualify for the service.
The National Council of the Teachers of Mathematics strongly suggests that classroom teachers incorporate opportunities to communicate, as well as problem-solving, into our math curriculum. My diverse students will love using engaging manipulatives during math. The English language learners, special education students, and all others in my classroom can benefit from these materials.
I want my classroom to be an exciting place! I am hoping to fill it with math-related materials like pattern blocks, tangrams, pentominoes, dice, and dominoes in order to create an environment that promotes thinking. These materials will be used on a daily basis to reinforce basic state standards, support student problem solving, and encourage rich discussions around mathematics. As students use these materials in a variety of ways, they will become flexible problem solvers, effective communicators, and masters of basic state standards, including computation facts, fractions, measurement, and spatial reasoning.
