Watching a child become excited about reading permeates the soul like nothing else. The skills to read and comprehend are truly one of the greatest gifts a teacher as they are skills for life. For some students learning to read is exceptionally challenging, particularly those with learning differences. With explicit phonics instruction and decodable books, it is possible to pave a smoother path for these students and help them become confident readers.
Decodable books provide new and struggling readers the opportunity to use their developing skills to read with increased accuracy and greater ease.
They are written specifically for beginning readers so the reader can focus their energy on comprehending the story instead of trying to decipher the written code. This early success helps the reader experience success and ultimately make greater gains.
These books will complement the evidenced-based phonics program, which is part of daily lessons, and create a bridge between phonics and reading. By creating meaningful reading opportunities, we will be able to help our students gain confidence and fall in love with reading. They will be utilized for small group instruction as well as independent reading to help students gain practice with specific phonetic concepts. They will help me build a pathway to proficiency for my students.
Please help me purchase some new decodable books to provide my students with the practice they need to become independent readers.
