Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our community of learners are bright and enthusiastic about learning. I love teaching the grammar school age, specifically, because they are motivated and self driven. They are driven and enthusiastic when discovering and learn about the world. Given the right tools and access to digital technology, they become researchers in their own right. They pursue interests in topics of study, driven by the "need to know more" self motivating spirit that will travel with them for the rest of their lives.
My Project
Students everywhere are very excited to pursue research in the classroom, especially when they are free to choose topics of interest specific to them. As a facilitator of learning, I understand how important it is to provide opportunities for research that motivate self-driven learning in the classroom. Traditionally, printed text has been used to support learning and research, but it is limited to what is already available in the classroom. Having a class set of Chromebooks would provide the opportunity to access information not offered by print. Students, able to pursue research based on individual choice, or student questions posed during units of study under current investigation, is the number one greatest motivator for improving reading skills for students struggling to reach grade level reading benchmarks. My ELL students come from backgrounds where access to technology in the home may not be on par with their counterparts from more stable socio-economical backgrounds. So, it is in their best interest to be able to provide technology in the classroom where research and self-interest study is supported.
The ratio of technology for my school is one iPad for four students.
The students in my classroom are competing with three other classrooms for access to a technology cart that is 7 years old. Being able to have a classroom set of Chromebooks, and a charging cart, would enable them to have access to information that will enhance their understanding of the world, motivating them to improve their reading skills while catching up to their more affluent counterparts. Finally, being able to compete in an environment that is digitally global, thanks to what technology has done for learning environments like the classroom, would help them to become global digital citizens while preparing them for college success and their future careers.
