Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a large urban elementary school. We are a title one school. My students are enthusiastic and motivated and are eager to participate in all the art projects I have to offer them.
Because funding is so tight at our school I wasn't able to order any new art materials for my art students this year. I have the basic crayons, paper and watercolors but no money for any extras for these eager learners.
Even though we are working with limited resources my students deserve the very richest and engaging curriculum I can offer them. I teach my second and third graders about art and culture from different countries. The students made their own "passports" added photos and filled in information about themselves such as their birthplace, birthday and age. We have "traveled" to Japan and Mexico, made Japanese Fish Kites and Mexican Bark Paintings and even learned to eat with chopsticks. I believe it is really important to incorporate reading and writing skills with art projects. The students are exposed to folktales from different countries and they are thrilled to have their "passport" stamped and to write in their "passport" about what they have learned in their travels.
Your donations of extra art supplies will make it possible for my students to "travel" to Ghana and learn about the unique and beautiful Adinkra symbols of Ghana. As a teacher I believe children learn best by doing and when they make a personal connection
with the material. I can teach them about Adinkra symbols and textile art from Ghana but with these materials they will have the opportunity to create their own stamps that they will print onto muslin and incorporated into a personal wall hanging. Thank you for opening up a whole new world of learning for my 2nd and 3rd grade art students.
