Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of our students are newcomers from Central American countries and Mexico. Some of them come to us with little to no schooling background, unable to read and write in their native language. Our students who are enrolled in 3rd-5th grade struggle to engage and participate in daily instruction due to the learning gaps and language barrier. Our students are eager and excited to learn, but are at risk of falling behind when we cannot provide work or books in their native language and on their levels.

My Project

Our newcomer students face many challenges when they are enrolled in our schools.

Not only are they adapting to a new culture and language, but they are also at an academic disadvantage when they lack a foundation in their native language.

We want to be able to foster students' love for learning by meeting their needs on a daily basis. To do so, we need to have access to materials in their first language and on their academic level.

The Spanish books will be given to our reading bilingual teachers to help them grow their classroom library, and provide their students with more options to choose from. Our newcomer students face many challenges when they are enrolled in our schools. The Spanish curriculum books will be used as planning resources for our reading bilingual teachers. These books will foster student independent practice by ensuring they are able to read and comprehend the text.
