Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine getting some great new ideas to teach microbiology techniques to students and not having the basic equipment to do the experiments. I need some adjustable pipettes to reinforce my lessons on evolution.

My students come from one of the toughest neighborhoods in Northern California.

The only news coming out of our city is about the crime and violence. When I tell people I teach were I do they are shocked. And then I have to explain the bad reputation the city has is not because of my students--they can't help were they came from. I have some of the sweetest students a teacher could want. My Biology students got the greatest increase of our school on the California Standards Test and I know they can continue to improve if we continue to believe in them.

My Project

Over this past summer I was a part of a fantastic program that taught college level microbiology to high school students. I want to take all the great ideas back into my class, but I need some basic equipment like the pipettes so I can have students experiment on bacteria and learn about evolution at the same time. In the past, my evolution unit involved inanimate objects, now I want to use living bacteria growing on petri dishes to show how a population changes over time.

You reap what you sow.

My students shine when they are given the chance. The small opportunities we offer them now pay off for the rest of their lives. These pipettes will allow my student to see a whole new world.
