This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever had a teacher say "Students, it is time to PARTY!"? In my third grade reading class, this is our fun reality. PARTY stands for Pick Anything Read To Yourself. While I cannot take full credit for this acronym, I can say that PARTYing has completely motivated my class to read!
I teach at a public school in Miami, Florida.
While I do teach two Gifted Classes, a majority of my students qualify for free-reduced lunch. With recent budget cuts to our Reading program, I have felt the effect of not being able to purchase items for my classroom which would enhance my student's education overall. The world relies heavily on technology and although books are still great and very applicable in school, eBooks and eReaders are opening up a new world of knowledge and experiences to students. I want to take my third graders into the 21st Century with the experience of using technology in the classroom as way to learn.
My Project
I am requesting 5 Simple Touch Nooks and cases so that I may purchase novels on these eReaders so students may read electronically while PARTYing in class. These Nooks will enhance the lives of my students because it will provide them the opportunity to experience reading electronically. These nooks will also further motivate the students in my class to read independently as well as interact and collaborate with each other through "The PARTY Book Club". My plan for this Book Club is to have students choose and read the same eBook on their Nook. The students will set their own goals for reading and will meet once a week to discuss the book they are reading together. Ultimately, my goal is to give my students the tools they need to instill a true passion for Reading at an early age in their hearts forever.
Every year, public school funding is cut.
While students may not feel the impact of these cuts directly, as a teacher I surely do. I want to provide the best education to my students and l know that these Nooks will provide students the opportunity to have new knowledge at their fingertips! Reading electronically is the new "way of the future". Why not provide them with the experience of reading for pleasure and reading to learn electronically now as well as instill a true love of reading?
