The students that I work with are "at risk" for reading failure. They have been identified through a series of fluency assessments. I meet with each group of Kindergarten students three days a week, for thirty minutes at a time. I meet with each group of First Graders for 30 minutes a day, five days a week.
Most of these "at risk" students do not enjoy the process of learning to read.
My job is to teach them strategies so that they are able to become confident, independent readers. The task at hand can become quite monotonous for the children as we power through strategy, skill and repeated readings daily.
My goal is to help them become lifelong readers who enjoy the act of reading, not just view it as a task.
My Project
Partners In Print is a project that will encourage families to engage, in a fun way, as equal partners in the process of teaching their children to read. Although as teachers, we spend eight hours a day with the children, we know that parents have the greatest influence on their child. Holding monthly family game nights will bring parents and their children together for a fun evening of working on reading skills.
The home-school connection is such a vital part of a child's success in school, especially during the early years.
Parents and students will be invited to the school on a monthly basis to participate in a family game night. During this time we will play together to reinforce the skills being taught in the classroom. The main skill taught in Kindergarten is phonics. This skill set includes identifying letters and their sounds. The requested Peaceable Kingdom Alphabet Go Fish & Letter Matching Games are a perfectly fun way to aid in acquiring this skill. Alphabet Acorns and ABC Cookies are also sure to be a big hit.
The First Grade students are taught to recognize sight words as their skill sets becomes a bit more advanced. Sight Word Bingo, Swat a Word and the Sight Word Pizza Board Games are great games for engaging children in the learning process without them even realizing it.
To ensure that all children have an opportunity to enjoy this family time, those who are unable to attend with their family, will be permitted to "sign out" the games in order to play at home. I will create game sacks that can be signed out once a month for a weekend.
I am so excited about the opportunity to engage my students, and their parents, in some good old fashioned family fun while learning.
