Somewhere deep in the heart of the Midwest lies our town. It is the quintessential rural town that has always been described in books, television, and movies since the beginning of time. Families have lived here for generations and take pride in everything that the small town has to offer. The townspeople come out in force at the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, as well as the Strawberry Festival. They crowd the stands to see their hometown team play ball and line the streets during the annual homecoming parade. It is, indeed, a tiny piece of Midwestern paradise.
Our high school special education classroom is a place of growth in academics, personality, and citizenship.
We celebrate each other's successes while learning from each other's mistakes; in short, we try our best and come together as one team with the common goal of becoming productive citizens in a global society.
My students don't let their disabilities define who they are or what they are capable of; instead, they embrace them and the challenges they pose without fear.
My Project
Flexible seating options abound in elementary and middle school classrooms all across America, but somehow, get lost in the transition to high school classrooms. Why is this? To help answer this question, in 2017, my students wrote a project for two dish chairs and have loved them since the day they were unpacked from the box. I can honestly say that this is where the most work gets done in my room by my students that are reluctant toward school. For this reason, I have become an advocate for its use in high school classrooms.
This project will help purchase a sturdy, office-grade loveseat for my students to use in our special education classroom.
As you can imagine, dish chairs aren’t the most sturdy, especially when your typical high school student weighs considerably more than an elementary school child. This, along with regular wear and tear, has led to the demise of both of our dish chairs in our flex seating area. For this reason, we are asking for an office-grade loveseat that has been rated for use with adults. Although it is a bit more expensive, we believe that it’s rugged construction and wipe clean exterior will last for many years to come.
