Parents are our best partners if we can give them the resources they need to partner up with us and help their children read! I am a first grade teacher in a low economic community. My classroom is full of single parent families.
These parents want the best for their children, but lack the time and resources to meet their child's educational needs. Some can get to the library for books, but others can't. Even those who do make it to the library, don't always know what level of book to get for their child. Many parents would make the time to work with their child if they had the ideas and materials to help. The problem is that most of them just don't know what to do to help their child succeed in school.
I've got the solution, but I don't have the resources to make it a reality. Children need to be reading daily, and they need to be reading at their level of learning proximity. If they are reading daily at their independent reading level, their reading experience is positive, successful, and enjoyable for both the child and the parent. I need a supply of non-fiction leveled readers for my classroom to add to our Parents as Partners Packs, to assure that all the students in my class will have the opportunity to read at their level with daily success. When you give a child a book at their reading level it empowers them and turns reading into an exciting adventure instead of a chore.
Here's the issue...our school has had drastic budget cuts. You are my only hope to make my vision a reality. Vision it with me...children taking home Parents as Partners Packs each night filled with the tools a parent needs to meet their child's learning needs. I've had parents beg me to help them help their child...but all I can do is tell them what to buy to help their child, which most can't buy. If you support this project we will give them more than ideas, but the actual supplies they need to meet their needs on a daily basis.
