My class is full of energetic, eager, and inquisitive 8 to 9-year-old kids. Learning is something that my 3rd graders love to do. They are kind, compassionate, and helpful. Every day, I am tasked with teaching students ranging from Kindergarten to 3rd-grade reading levels, which makes meeting each of their individual needs challenging.
Our school is located on the south side of Chicago in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
Unfortunately, some of them have had experiences that no child should have to live through. 100% of my students are on free or reduced lunch, and yet they are rich with spirit in spite of the challenges they face. It is my goal to provide them with the high-quality education that they deserve.
To increase parent investment in their scholar's learning, I will be hosting a homework club for parents each week. During this time, parents can sit in the classroom with their child (and me) to work on their homework.
Third grade is an extremely important year for scholars.
Research shows that children who do not read on grade level by the end of third grade are 4 times less likely to graduate high school on time. Parental investment in learning is crucial for getting scholars to where they need to be by the end of third grade.
Knowing this, I am hoping to increase parental investment by giving parents a space to be invested! While many parents will show up regardless of an additional incentive, I would like the opportunity to reward those parents who spend their limited free time to assist their scholars in their learning.
With the help of my school, I am able to provide snacks for those parents and scholars who choose to attend. However, with your help, I am hoping to also have a raffle for a $10 gift card each week for the parents that attend Homework Club. This will serve as an added bonus for the parents who are going the extra mile to ensure the success of their scholar!
