Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have the desire to read but are struggling. The read aloud will model reading strategies and foster critical thinking. I know that they all have the ability to read at grade level. They will slowly build confidence as they continue to be exposed to these read aloud on a daily basis.

My students are second language learners that struggle with grammar and vocabulary.

I know that this exposure will enable them to build background knowledge, make connections, and understand the theme or message from their readings. They are limited at home with resources and most parents don't speak English and some are unfortunately illiterate. They are currently not reading at grade level but I see it in their faces that they want to improve. This listening center will develop hope because it will give them the chance to love literature. I don't want my struggling readers to get discourage. I hope for them to fall in love with reading and read for pleasure and not because they have too.

My Project

I work with a different group of students daily for 40 minutes while the rest of the class are either pulled for resources, independently reading or reading with the paraprofessional. These students will highly benefit from the listening centers as they listen to modeled reading. Struggling readers will positively respond to recorded books. I know that it will established an interest in reading, given this wonderful opportunity. My students' lives will slowly change as they gain an awareness and understanding for literature. The chapter books can be used repeatedly until they are capable to fluently read the books themselves.

The listening center will impact my students because it will help them understand the content, expose them to new vocabulary, use imagination and to critically think.

I know they will use the center appropriately while it gives them the opportunity to increase their fluency level. I definitely know that a few of my students will make improvements and jump from far below grade level to one day become a proficient reader. Increasing their comprehension skills will open doors and think COLLEGE!
