Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach second grade in an inner-city school where access to physical education resources is limited. Sadly, these children do not have regular gym classes or standardized sports. Consequently, I take responsibility for bringing physical activity and exercise into their young lives.
I want the children in my class to feel and be healthy, both mentally and physically, and I know that requires getting regular exercise. I am asking for funding to purchase a parachute and accompanying CD from Kaplan Early Learning, as well as a set of yoga cards and activities suitable for young children.
The parachute is a large cirle of brightly-colored nylon with handles for the children to grasp. The children stand in a circle and together by stretching up and then bending down they make the parachute fill and fluff with air. The parachute provides a beautiful and fun way for them to get into stretching and bending and moving. Working with the parachute will provide hours of fun playing together in groups for my students.
In addition, I know that my students would enjoy the exercises and poses they would practice using the instructions from the yoga kit. This kit has many individual cards that show poses from a variety of views, so it is easy for the students to see what to do. Along with teaching my second-graders, I also volunteer as the yoga/dance instructor for the entire elementary school. I am certain that the parachute and yoga activities will bring joy to all the kids. I can just imagine their smiling faces when I start the year with fresh activities and fun ways for them to move around and get energized!
