Ms. Teller from Portland ME is requesting classroom basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Paper's Path to Production

My students need the blender, tubs, frames and screen material to make paper. The rolling pin and dish towels are used to roll and dry the finished product. We will contain it all in the tote.

My Students

Our city is a vibrant rainbow of individuals from around the world. Our students are diverse in every way. They are curious, brave, and smart. They question the world around them and their place in it. Their drive to dig deeper into chemistry helps them to answer these questions.

They are our future change makers.

Let's give them the tools and the knowledge, so they can make our planet a better place to live. I believe in them and so should you!

My Project

The students in my chemistry class are interested in the application of chemistry as related to material sciences. They are asking: what are things of made of and how are those materials created?

We will examine the history and chemistry of paper making as our case study.

During our investigation, students will hear from experts at a local paper company and learn from them how to make their own paper. This will eventually lead to their own independent investigations on other types of materials.

As an extension to this unit, our students will go to our local fifth grade classes to teach those students about paper making and materials science. They will use the supplies from this project to make paper with the fifth graders. This is a great opportunity for the high school students to role model curiosity and scientific practices with the younger students.
