My students come from a variety of backgrounds which means that not all students can afford the school supplies that they need at the beginning of the school year. Not all of my students can learn well only using digital media, some really benefit more from having the materials in a hard copy format. I believe that being able to interact with material on paper with a pen or highlighter allows them to take more ownership of the text and increase their fluency with complex texts.
Students, even in the age of technology, still need paper. Being able to edit an essay with a pen on paper is still an important skill. Creating hand written flashcards or research for a research paper on index cards is still an important skill. When the internet is down, paper handouts can still be given to keep a lesson moving and successful.
Technology does not allow students to completely interact with a text the way paper and post-its can.
Students cannot write and express their thoughts well in a digital book and not all students can afford to buy their own copy of every novel we read.
