This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 5th Grade students need to develop their artistic abilities and exposure to the tools used by professional artists. My school is exploring ways to add the "A" -the Arts- into our vision of a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math).
Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, in a primarily working class, inner-city neighborhood, my students do not have easy access to quality art supplies.
Also, coming from families where parents may be working multiple jobs and struggling to meet everyday needs, my students may find that quality art supplies are luxuries that their family cannot afford.
My students need to be able to visualize themselves as artists, using quality tools and materials.
My Project
We have been exploring how to use different types of drawing materials in our classroom - graphite pencils, watercolor pencils, markers, and oil pastels. Recently, we received a donation of charcoal and charcoal pencils. Luckily, we were able to find some paper with the right texture to experiment with these new materials.
My students loved experimenting with lifting charcoal off the paper with kneaded erasers.
We need more paper to continue experimenting with charcoal, oil pastels, and chalk pastels. Now that they have been exposed to working with different types of paper, they are aware of and excited to use the "right kind of paper."
As developing artists, my students deserve to use quality art materials for their projects. These materials elevate their view of themselves and their work. Instead of "making do" with sketchpads from the dollar store that don't have the proper texture, they need sketchpads with the proper texture to create their art.
