Paper Making in Art

My Project

In elementary art we waste so, so much paper. Students have paper scraps from scissor projects, there are countless failed attempts and practice sketches, and schools all over the country have so much paper waste due to printing and copying errors. I do my best to reduce waste as much as possible in the art room by recycling and reusing when I can.

For Earth Day, I want my students to learn how to recycle paper.

The process is easy enough that students can even do this at home with their own supplies. This project would allow me to have the basic necessities to teach students this process and create their own paper to take home. Students will also be creating their own crayons by removing the paper off of the old broken ones, and melting them in silicone molds!

I will blend old paper and water first, and pour the mixture into the black tubs on my list. Students will use the screens to dunk in the tub, and sift out the paper mulch. Using the sponges, they will pat the screen to remove excess water, and then lay the screen in the sun to dry. The extra cloth and mesh with the screen frames will allow multiple students to use the screens in one class period.
