Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in Brooklyn. We are a small school, with approximately four hundred students. Our class has thirty four students. Seventy-one percent of our students are entitled to free lunch due to living below the poverty line. I teach in a special education class with approximately forty percent of the class having special needs.
This class has a wonderful mix of personalities.
There are several students with severe behavioral challenges and other students who are so shy that making eye contact can be difficult. As a whole, we have a fantastic time in class. The students and teachers laugh a lot in class. We try to make learning fun. I am most proud of how the students interact with one another. At the beginning of the year, there were many verbal scuffles and mistreating one another.
Now, I am proud to say that we coexist more as a family. The students are helpful with one another and everyone is treated with the respect and courtesy that they deserve. This environment is conducive for a wonderful learning atmosphere. Our students are learning, but our lack of materials hinders our progress.
My Project
Our students would benefit from these materials in so many ways. The cardstock and construction paper will help them create books on various topics. They love to create books to display what they have learned. The highlighters will help them locate important information while reading the articles we use to prepare them for the NYS ela exam. When the students have access to the basic supplies they need, we can actually see the drastic difference in their academic success. They feel more confident and feel more accomplished with their final product. These materials will help us to help our students with their academic progress.
