My students need the basic school supplies which include copy paper for daily academic activities, pencils, erasers, dry erase markers and writing paper.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an extremely low-income, multi-ethnic elementary school in Southern California. I am currently teaching second grade students, and they are participating in a rotation schedule in which I teach a total of 32 students during the school day. I enjoy extending the learning beyond the normal expectations as a teacher and like to integrate Science and Social studies into the daily schedule. I am the MESA adviser at my school for students 3rd to 5th grade. As the MESA adviser I help prepare students for Math, Science, and engineering fields. By providing students with lots of math and science activities I help motivate students to come to school daily eager to learn.
I work with approximately 62 students each day, which is rare for most elementary schools and difficult with the lack of school supplies. I need to make copies for the basic language arts and math sessions but I also feel that Science and social studies furthers my students ability of compete in our ever demanding field for educated math, science, and social studies fields.
Our economy is changing and we need to prepare these students for the challenging work force. I am provided with two reams of paper each month and am expected to make homework packets, test, lesson plans, and miscellaneous other copies required for simple activities. This is without considering the total number of students that I have to teach during the month. I am unable to purchase paper for my class and they have to spend too much time trying to copy from the board when a simple template would facilitate the learning so that the learning is not focused on copying from the board but instead on the real learning of the concepts. I have not been provided with writing paper for the past two years and now have to beg for paper from other teachers that have extra.
The solution would be to provide these students with the paper, pencils, dry erase markers, and writing paper to ensure that they receive the best possible learning opportunity available to them.
The copy paper provides them with the opportunity of participate in science lab experiments, which enhances their motivation for attending school. The expo markers provide them with the opportunity to practice basic number facts in order to become fluent in math. Erasers free them of the stress related to making mistakes when they want their final writing drafts to be presentable. Writing paper allows them to express themselves with words that encourage them to share their thinking with the rest of us.
Your donation would ensure that all students, no matter where they live or their level of income, receive equal access to educational material. Your donation will also ensure that students have the opportunity to learn science and social studies.
