Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My school’s mascot is the Panther, and our Guidelines for Success are Panther PRIDE; P is for positivity, R is for responsibility, I is for integrity, D is for determination and E is for empathy. This year my colleague and I came up with the idea to create a school-wide celebration for students who are nominated by their teacher for demonstrating any of the PRIDE traits. For our first round, 100 students and their teachers were celebrated.

It is not often that students have the opportunity to build relationships and interact with their teachers outside of the classroom.

These celebrations serve two goals; students are celebrated for their achievements and they get to have a formal, “fancy” catered lunch with their teachers. Each month’s celebration has a different menu and theme and is decorated according to the month or holiday.

The goal of this project is to start gathering materials for decor that can be reused multiple times for different celebrations, rather than using disposable products that will be thrown away. These items also provide a more fancy ambiance for students. The frames will be used as centerpieces and will include positive messages or images according to the theme of the celebration. I can tell you from the first celebration that word started spreading around campus and teachers and students are excited for the next round. I hope to make improvements and make it better for each session.
