Pandemic Times Are Tough! Positive Reinforcements for My Low-SES/Dropout-Risk Students

Help me give my students positive incentives that will increase self-efficacy and reduce dropout rates. Small incentives for missing assignments, large incentives for increases in overall GPA!

My Students

My students are low SES 9th graders who have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. They are currently at risk of dropping out. Many of them have parents who work multiple jobs or immigrant parents who do not understand the school system or the English language.

During the pandemic, my students became primary caregivers for younger siblings rather than participating in an online school.

In their words, "In 7th grade, we suddenly lost our connections at school. We didn't have in-person interaction with teachers, staff, and friends. And at home, we were in charge. We cleaned and babysat--we were the adults. Now, we feel like 7th graders in 8th-grade bodies. It's hard to come back to school and be expected to be a normal kid again. We feel out of the habit of school, and we are not used to the structure of it anymore." My goal is to give these kids positive motivators to get them to pass 9th grade and successfully transition into high school life.

My Project

I am a school counselor working with low-SES ninth graders. My ninth graders have experienced major disruptions in attachments, routines, family dynamics, structure, mental health, and more!

These incentives provide positive reinforcement for students' good behavior and academic performance.

I run a Study Skills class that provides extra academic support. Students in this class who complete work will receive a snack or treat for completion at the end of the period. Those who are able to increase their GPA and pass all classes will be entered into a drawing for the soccer balls, headphones, and other big prizes. We are trying to give our 9th graders short-term incentives to get them through this year and transition successfully into high school. That will then have a long-term impact on decreasing dropout rates.
