This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a school on the far northeast side of Chicago where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Due to the lack of funding, I am not able to buy any new books for my 6th grade Language Arts classroom. We are trying to improve test scores and prepare for the new Common Core assessments, but we do not have the resources we need. Our students are wonderful and work extremely hard. They often comment on our lack, of quality reading materials, and it is easy to see their disappointment. In March I let my students take home a majority of the books in our classroom library, so they would have something to read while learning at home. Once the year ended and my students moved on to the next grade those books became theirs.
I need to replace the books from our classroom library that were lost in the quick move to remote learning at the beginning of the pandemic so my current students have a variety of texts to read.
My Project
The love of reading is important for my students success. As we are still learning at home, my students access to a variety of books is at an all time low. The internet is great, but cracking open a good book can't be compared to.
I want my students to have a love for reading, but that is hard to do when a pandemic makes accessing books impossible.
I need to refill our classroom library with a variety of high interest texts, so my students will get excited about reading again.
