Help me give my students books to read with a partner. Partner reading is a motivational strategy that encourages reading fluency and comprehension as well as instills the joy of reading among peers.
The children in my class live in a high-poverty community. Many of them are refugees whose appreciative families have escaped their homelands, searching for a better life in the U.S.A. Most of my students are English language learners. For some of my students, this is the first time they have ever enrolled in school.
They may come from all over the world, but my students have in common that they love coming to school.
My classroom provides a safe and happy environment in contrast to the challenges that my students and their families endure daily as they navigate their new lives in the USA. Each morning they are lined up with heart-warming smiles, eager to enter the classroom and start a new day of learning. Many of them have expressed that they would rather spend every day at school than at home.
My Project
My second graders have been safely nestled in our hybrid classroom since September. We have accomplished learning together on our school campus while maintaining social distance in a Covid-style classroom. We wear masks, sometimes double masks, and sit with clear safety dividers between us.
The double sets of these popular books will allow
the students safely read together, each holding their own copy, with a clear screen.
Having two or more of each title allows students to enjoy reading together, as they help and learn from each other using their acquired reading strategies.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
