Help me give my students in sixth grade two iPads and 50 primary journals to help kindergarten students learn to read, write, reflect and create video memories together that can last a life time.
My sixth grades students come from a diverse, multicultural community. They are just starting middle school. Research has proven that middle school is a difficult developmental stage due to circumstances caused by maturation. Many of the students find themselves lost and confused. Giving the middle schoolers an opportunity to work with kindergarten students might help during this transitional period. This program hopes to have a positive affect on everyone.
"It truly does take a village to raise a child" and with the community's support we will impact around 60 sixth graders and 60 kindergartners.
Having a Pal helps both grade level students in feeling good about themselves. Pairing sixth graders with kindergartners will help all the students transition into school in a positive way.
My Project
We are requesting 50 primary journals and two iPad minis. The students in “Pals for Reading" will be meeting on a regular basis throughout the school year until May 2019. The kindergarten students will reflect with their Pals about stories they read together.
The entire year together the sixth grade students will be documenting their visits on the iPad minis, in order to create amazing videos to share with their Pals.
The 50 Journals requested will be used throughout the year by the kindergartners to color pictures that reflect the main idea of the story, and the sixth graders will write summarizes with the kindergartners’ in the same primary journals. The sixth graders will reflect about their experience with the kindergartners in their own journal, too. The students will interact with their kindergarten Pal and learn all about them and their families throughout the year.
With the two iPad minis requested, the sixth graders will be able to document their experiences by photographing and videoing their visits together, as well as, creating Youtube videos of the entire year together. The iPad minis are user friendly and are the easiest for creating videos. Students will upload the movie, so each Pal can have the links to share and everyone will watch all the students' videos towards the end of the program.
