If there are truly any group of students that deserve the opportunity to have every resource available at their fingertips, it would be my 5th grade class. They are an amazing group of goofy, hardworking and truly turned-around students from their previous years. In previous years, my current students had many behavioral issues, full of disrespect, lack of determination in their education and just obtained an overall sense of being lost in the world. However, this year has been a magical and life-changing experience, even for myself. I see the maturity and their ability to take my "life chats" with them, and practice them in this world.
To be so dedicated to their education, regardless of the lack of support or experiences they are dealing with upon the outside world, makes this class a true inspiration.
Many of my students deal with issues and situations beyond their age level or control. The one thing I try to provide every day to them, is a positive, stable and trusting environment, while also preparing them for their academic and social lives.
My Project
Math tends to be a more difficult subject for my students due to that fact that typically, students are taught concepts and that is just the way it is! Students are expected to memorize steps and algorithms, but very rarely are able to explore the engagement or concepts in any other way.
When learning is paired with fun and games, it causes students to interact with the concepts and enjoy doing so, making learning more meaningful and effective.
With these games and folders, my hope is to teach the concepts to the students and use them as a resource for enjoyment to deepen their understanding of the concepts.
