Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When students get frustrated about learning how to draw I can sympathize, knowing I was there too at one point in my high school artistry. My overall goal in art class is to teach students the skills they need to not only be successful in visual art to continue onto Advanced and AP Art, but also to teach them the skills they need to start and finish goals in life. Through perseverance and hard work they can get through their frustrations of drawing and move towards becoming more successful artists and learners!

Having a welcoming environment for my students is a top priority for me as many of my students I am serving are from low income families.

Many students do not have materials, time or space to work at home on the art projects, yet they are expected to finish projects at home? I would like to help student success and improve the quality of their work while in class with me, but materials can quickly dwindle as they are used by five full classes. I firmly believe my students deserve access to quality materials needed for each new project every month.

My Project

Every Spring Beginning Art student learns the magic of how to mix color through the use of acrylic and watercolor paints. Over the years I have witnessed students experience the joys of completing their first paintings. This Spring semester students will begin to learn how to paint with acrylic paints for a upcoming portrait and cacti projects. Students will need access to acrylic paints, canvas paper and new brushes as these materials get used up every year. By providing access to these materials students will begin exploring and improving their painting techniques for future advanced and advanced placement classes. Not all of my students may plan on becoming professional artists, but the skills and development of their creativity in my class will benefit them for a lifetime.

The students in my class are not always going to be able to have supplies to complete their projects at home and that is why ample art supplies are needed for their various projects while they are present in my class.

The use of the materials in Beginning Art is not wasted either because as students create their masterpieces they simultaneously gain confidence in learning how to make their artwork better and prepare to show their work publicly.

Providing these materials can be tricky every year since our art budget has dwindled down to literally nothing due to district wide budget cuts. Reaching this project goal for supplies will mean a tremendous amount and assist our students in making their painting dreams a reality for this Spring!
