This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever made a painting that would look that much better if it were created on a painting board? Having a painting board available will allow my students to create a professional piece of art.

I teach a group of twenty-five first-grade students in one of the cities with the highest crime rates in the nation.

All students at my school site receive a free lunch. 97% of my school's student population is Hispanic, most of them first generation studying in this country. School is one of the only places in which my students interact with someone who speaks academic English. Living and attending school in a highly impoverished urban setting, my students are not exposed to many educational experiences outside of the classroom. Given this information, making my students' learning engaging and entertaining is highly important to keep them focused on their education.

My Project

My students recently received painting supplies to create art pieces as a basis to their writing. In our English Language Development unit there are some lessons about a person that creates a painting as a gift. Their are a number of interpretations as to what the painting is about. Students have written about that painting, I would like for them to write about their own painting. To create their own painting, they will need a painting board.

I believe that creating a painting on a painting board will allow my students to pursue their interest in painting and also strengthen their interest in writing.

Please give my students an opportunity to express their artistic self by providing them with a painting board.
